PART 2 - Active Schools Week 2019

Partnership during Active School Week 2019

The Active School Week involved a huge commitment by everyone in our school including pupils, teachers and especially our Active School Committee. It was delivered in partnership with many local clubs including,

• Ballymackey F.C.,

• Tipperary G.A.A,

• Nenagh Basketball Club and

• Nenagh Athletic Club

To conclude activities our Parents Association organised a Fun 5K Walk/Run/Cycle for the school community over the May bank holiday weekend. Young and old came out to support this event and it was the perfect ending to a fun packed week!

Active Shool Week: Apr/May 2019

Active School Week 2019 took place from the 29th April to the 3rd May 2019. Every pupil and member of staff wore their tracksuits to school and children received active homework instead of written work.

#ASW19, DAY 1

We started the week with ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ in the yard, led by our Active School Committee. This continued each morning getting everyone’s heart rates going before the work of the day.

We also launched our Active School Walkway. This resource was developed by Active Schools in partnership with Get Ireland Walking. Colourful and durable outdoor signposts now mark out a walking route around our school grounds.

After break, the entire school were put through their paces with a whole school circuit involving 12 different stations, including skipping, hurdles, ladders and hopscotch.

A first busy day, but all went well!

#ASW19, DAY 2

Our morning began with ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ and also incorporated the dance moves from the Macarena. Instruction was provided by one of our 4th class pupils - she had great patience, especially with the teachers!

Our focus was on Games for the remainder of the day as pupils were engaged in dodgeball, basketball and handball.

Upon our return to the classroom, we made an effort to be active in Irish and Maths.

Children received a record sheet to log their 60 minutes of exercise in school, on the yard and at home.

#ASW19, DAY 3

Out activities included ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ and a visit from a basketball coach from our local club.

As well as having fun, the children learned some valuable ball handling skills.

#ASW19, DAY 4

On Thursday, we had a very busy day. We continued our ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ and our efforts to improve our dance moves.

Our local soccer club, Ballymackey F.C. took each class for a training session. The time was spent performing drills and playing matches.

In the afternoon, a G.A.A coach visited our school and children displayed their hurling and camogie skills.

#ASW19, DAY 5

On Friday morning, we set off excitedly on two big coaches for our first visit to Nenagh Athletic Club’s Indoor Track. After a warm up, the children were divided into four groups. They had the opportunity to try the long jump, high jump, hurdles and foam javelins.

It was truly a fantastic experience for the children and teachers.

In the afternoon, we had our annual Sports Day.

Children engaged in activities such as the potato and spoon race, sack race, skipping race and well as other novelty events.
